I just 'stumbled' on this quote from MIP IP Stars review for HGF in 2023. I was looking up myself, as you do from time to time:"In addition to their comprehensive legal knowledge of all things IP, they immediately understand the client's needs and they showcase an impressive commercial understanding, enabling them to give to-the-point advice that actually fits the client's need. Furthermore, Lee Curtis, Lauren Somers and Suzan Moss [listed as Suzan Ure in the guide], who we regularly work with, all have a great sense of humour and are great fun to work with. That is why they are our definitive go-to firm in the UK."William James, an American philosopher and psychologist, and Clive James, Australian critic, journalist, broadcaster, writer and lyricist are both credited as saying:"Common sense and a sense of humor are the same thing, moving at different speeds. A sense of humor is just common sense, dancing."You always need a sense of humour to go with business and common sense.Proof I didn't make the MIP quote up:

Well I didn't win UK Trademark Attorney of the Year last night at the Managing IP Intellectual Property Awards, but in contrast to Terry Malloy played by Marlon Brandon in 'On the Waterfront', I was at least a contender in being nominated, and had my name on the big screen. I also didn't get a one way ticket to Palookaville.Congratulations to all the other nominees in my category and in other categories, and the eventual winners at the awards ceremony last night, notably Marie Walsh and Caroline Pigott of HGF Limited who won their categories, and Emma Pitcher of Boult Wade Tennant, who was crowned 'UK Trademark Attorney of the Year' in my category. The awards HGF won can be found here: https://lnkd.in/ef4MkBFD We had a total of 17 nominations on the night.Full list of winners here: https://lnkd.in/e5JiUv9FFor those who don't understand the multiple film references above, click here: https://lnkd.in/eiDm-UT2. #IntellectualProperty #MIP #ManagingIPAwards #MIPEMEA2024

Good to talk to the Business Members Group ('BMG') of the Chartered Trading Standards Institute in Manchester on lookalike products with Emma Pallisterand Melissa Buamah. We spoke of the Thatcher’s Lemon Cider (trade marks and passing off), M&S Gin (designs) and Colin The Caterpillar (trade marks, passing off and the importance of PR) cases. All with varying degrees of success for the IP rights holders in each case.

Just finished reading ‘Manchester Unspun: pop, property and power in the original modern city’ by Andrew Spinoza. I would highly recommend it. Very well written, interspersed with some great insight and anecdotes on the major characters operating in the city, many born outside the city, including the author.Excellent read for anyone interested in how the city of Manchester came from the first modern industrial city, where the Industrial Revolution was born, through the decline of the 60s and 70s and then to the renaissance of the city built on its unique musical and sporting scene and history, how some of those musical and sporting characters became major forces in property development in the city, how the city government was far sighted, at sometimes controversial, at playing the national government funding game and opening the city to the world again. The redevelopment of the city now has a life of its own, with towers and developments springing up across the city, a city which at least based on pre-pandemic figures was the fastest growing city in Europe.‘The original modern city’ is ultimately a marketing slogan based on the ‘original modern’ design theme of Peter Saville, who designed the iconic early record sleeves of Factory Records, who were behind bands such as Joy Division and New Order, and who effectively funded the Hacienda, which some argue was the basis for the cultural and economic renaissance of the city. To quote Peter Saville from the book:’It is not the most beautiful or has the best climate, but it has addressed the challenge of the world in the modern era and that is the essence of Manchester.’The book even includes a page on a trade mark dispute, so I stuck to my general rule of only posting on Manchester and a very little bit of IP 😀 Buy the book below and it can be found in all good bookstores:
