Indoor floors are perfect, and a driveway or smooth pavement may also work well. You could set up your own track — many RC tracks are made from rubber, which is a great material for inducing drifts — but that could be expensive, and you'd need a lot of space. Avoid surfaces like gravel, rough pavement, or soil.

A dirt track's racing surface may be composed of any soil, although most seasoned dirt racers probably consider a moist, properly-prepared clay oval their favorite dirt racing surface.

THE MINIMUM acreage required for building a mile track is approximately 55 acres, compared to 27 acres for a five- eighths-mile track and 17.5 acres for a half-mile track.
